Child Victims

What is child abuse?

According to Canada’s Department of Justice, the term "child abuse" refers to the violence, mistreatment or neglect that a child or adolescent may experience while in the care of someone they either trust or depend on, such as a parent or guardian.

The Canadian Incidence Study of Reported Child Abuse and Neglect (2003) divides child abuse into five categories:

  • Physical Abuse
  • Sexual Abuse
  • Emotional Abuse
  • Neglect
  • Exposure to Domestic Violence
