GLBTTQ Victims

"Anti-LGTB" and intimate partner violence committed against GLBTTQ people in Canada is both prevalent and underreported. The Centre, a Vancouver-based Community Centre that serves and supports "Lesbian, Gay, Transgendered, Bisexual People and their Allies" reports from their 2001 LGTB survey that:

  • 76% of respondents suffered verbal abuse;
  • 29% of respondents were harassed in their workplace;
  • 19% of respondents were physically abused; and,
  • 56% of respondents experienced multiple forms of abuse.

Furthermore, a national study of over 1,200 Canadian lesbian and gay people conducted by the Coalition for Lesbian and Gay Rights in Ontario suggests that 22% of respondents were physically assaulted.

The Centre goes on to report that in-relationship or spousal violence is "experienced by a large percentage of LGTB individuals". In their own survey of LGTB persons, The Centre reports that 29% of lesbian respondents and 22% of gay respondents indicated that they had been abused by a same-sex partner.

Along with the many and varied resources that are available to all victims of violent crime in the National Capital Region, there are several resources that are available specifically for GLBTTQ people.
