Victims of Hate Crime

A Hate Crime occurs when violent or non-violent crime, motivated by hatred, is enacted against a person or group of people. Victims of hate crimes usually belong to a visible minority. According to Juristat statistics on reported hate crime in Canada in 2001/02: "the majority were motivated by race/ethnicity (57%), followed by religion (43%) and sexual orientation (10%)1". Statistics Canada further indicates that nearly one-third of all hate crimes involve violence.

In Canada, hate crimes are taken very seriously. It is important for victims of such crime to be aware that there are specific services, along with many other general victims’ services, that are available to assist them in the National Capital Region.
