Immigrant Victims
When victims of violence are recent immigrants to Canada, their needs may differ from other victims. In order to properly assist immigrant victims following incidents of violence, law enforcement agencies and community-based victims’ service providers must recognize the many difficulties faced by new immigrants.
Some of the barriers faced by immigrant victims of violence are as follows:
- language;
- knowledge of (and access to) relevant resources, laws and information;
- sponsorship issues;
- financial, employment and/or childcare difficulties; and
- social isolation.
Due to these difficulties, immigrant victims of violence need to be assured that there are resources available to help them with the challenges that they will face as a result of their victimization. Along with the many and varied resources that are available to all victims of violent crime in the National Capital Region, there are resources that are available specifically for immigrant victims.
