Male Victims

Results from the 2004 Statistics Canada General Social Survey (GSS) on victimization indicate that men and women over the age of 15 are victims of violent crime at very similar rates. The type of violence by which men and women are victimized is where there are large discrepancies between the genders. While females are more often victims of sexual assault in Canada, approximately 1 out of 6 male children are sexual assault victims. Males, however, are much more likely than women to be victims of physical assault and robbery.

Furthermore, the GSS study found that only 5% of male victims of violent crime in Canada access the assistance of a formal or community victims’ service. This low access rate indicates an overwhelming need for victims’ service agencies to reach male victims.
