Violence against Women

OCTEVAW (the Ottawa Coalition To End Violence Against Women) lists these startling facts within their April 2008 Violence Against Women Fact Sheet:

  • Women are more likely than men to be the victims of the most severe forms of spousal assault, as well as spousal homicide, sexual assault and stalking.
  • Women are about 8 times more likely than men to experience violence in relationships (especially choking, threats with a weapon and sexual assault). In 2004, these forms of assault were directed at 254,000 women in Canada.
  • 4 out of 5 people murdered by their spouses are women murdered by men.
  • The majority of victims of spousal assault and over 90% of sexual assault victims do not seek support from the criminal justice system.
  • Women 25 years of age and under make up the highest risk group related to violence. Young women are at the greatest risk of assault by intimate partners, as well as spousal homicide and sexual assault.

From OCTEVAW’s 2004 Status of Women Fact Sheet: Statistics on Violence against Women in Canada comes comes this alarming statistic:

  • Half of Canadian women (51%) have been victims of at least one act of physical or sexual violence since the age of 16.

As these figures indicate, violence against women in Canada is a major epidemic. Given the vast number of women who are victims of violence, there are a multitude of victims' service providers that cater specifically to the needs of female victims.
